So let’s start with the basics...what is best to heat your home?

Why do we say this? If you have the patience and the time to read all that we have written here, you’ll come across why...reliability. Yes, electric heating (which includes heat pumps, by the way - yes, heat pumps are electric heating) is quite expensive to run. But it’s SO reliable and cheap to maintain. Your heating system should, above all else, be reliable. What good is a fantastic heating system (which may even be cheap to run) if it fails on you when you need it most?

For people without much time to read these pages, the cheapest of all is convector panel (or radiant) electric wall heaters. They are so incredibly cheap, like £30!

You can get ones with thermostats and timers built in for that! Though we suggest that you think a little outside the box, spend a little more, and install air thermostats to control them. On from that is electric underfloor heating, fanned heaters, and trench heating. Is there still a place for gas central heating with radiators? Of course! We recognise that electric heating isn’t for everyone, but at least do the maths first.

How does convected heat work?

Air is drawn into the heater naturally - by the warm air coming out. This creates a GENTLE (not fanned) movement of air which warms the room. It is better than a ‘radiator’ as it doesn’t get unbearably hot on the outside (so is reasonably safe to touch) and is so electrically safe that many electric convector heaters can even be used in bathrooms.
